How does the drug work and how long does it take to notice the effect

The principle of operation is simple. After instillation, an antiseptic protective film is formed on the mucous membrane of the organ.

Under the influence of silver ions, microvessels begin to narrow, and bacteria die. If there are inflammatory processes, then they gradually weaken and become less pronounced.

At first time after instillation it becomes much easier... The therapeutic effect of the drug and the feeling that it has begun to act can be seen within a few minutes after instillation.

Dosage and frequency of administration

The dosage and frequency of use of the drug for infants and children under one year old depend on the type of disease in the treatment of which Protargol is used.

Urological infections. 2% solution is used as a means for washing the organs of the genitourinary system.

ENT diseases, such as a runny nose. Instill 1 drop 3 times a day.

The positive effect of therapy can be observed after two or three days. The approximate duration of treatment is 5 days.

If during this time the medicine has not helped the child, the therapist prescribes another remedy.

These are approximate dosages; they are by no means guidelines for treatment. Exact dosage and the duration of use is determined by the doctor.

Method of use

Apply drops by instillation. When treating a nose, it is important to clear the nasal passages before instillation. To do this, you can use cotton swabs, a special suction, a nasal bulb.

Cotton swabs should be used very carefully, as they can damage the delicate mucous membranes of the baby. Doctors recommend using cotton swabs together with sticks, which can be obtained by tightly twisting a small piece of cotton into a tube.

After cleaning, we alternately instill drops in the nose, the child should lie on his back. Sometimes Protargol is not buried, but only lubricate the nostrils with it with a cotton flag or a stick.

When treating the eyes, the medicine is instilled into the mucous membrane, slightly lowering the lower eyelid. It is better to bury it in the ears, putting the child on its side.

Shake well before use.

Interaction with other substances

Negative information about the interaction of Protargol with others medicines not.

Check with your pediatrician before treatment if your child is taking any other medications.

It usually works well with other cold remedies. Doctors, on the other hand, prescribe a combination therapy in which Protargol can go as an additional tool or main.

There were no cases of overdose, but the dosage should be strictly observed. Otherwise, side effects may occur or increase.

Although there is only one contraindication to the use of the drug, the drug gives different

What does this medicine look like?

Protargol is available in powder form yellow-brown color, from which an aqueous solution is prepared by mixing the dry extract with purified water. It dissolves quickly and easily, but only pharmacists in pharmacies should dilute it, since it is necessary to accurately weigh its components.

From such a powder make 1 - 5% solutions, and the less water in the composition, the higher its concentration is obtained. The disinfecting qualities of Protargol begin to increase along with the percentage. But along with this, the number of side effects.

Features of the drug

Protargol has been used in medical practice for several decades. This drug has both advantages and disadvantages. Don't use it yourself without a doctor's prescription. Infants often have a functional runny nose that is not caused by viruses or bacteria. It usually appears as a result of overdrying the air with heating devices.

The room where the baby is located must be constantly moistened so that the nasal mucosa does not dry out, as drying out causes an illness of the upper respiratory tract, because a dry nasopharynx promotes the rapid development of bacteria. Protargol is medical silver solution... It does not moisturize the mucous membrane, but, on the contrary, is able to dry it a little. Therefore, it is not suitable for restoring moisture in the nasopharynx. This drug is used to treat bacterial and viral rhinitis, conjunctivitis, pharyngitis.

silver contains about 1 - 2% and this dose is enough to disinfect the throat and nasal cavity. Many parents use it in preventive purposes seasonal viral diseases. It should be noted that this drug is capable of accumulating in the body, and this is unsafe for a small child.

pharmachologic effect

Protargol has an antiseptic (disinfecting) effect. It is characterized by antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and astringent effects. In addition, unlike antibiotics, it does not cause the development of dysbiosis... Getting on the mucous membrane damaged due to inflammation, this drug forms a protective film, leading to a decrease in the sensitivity of the mucous membrane, and tissue begins to heal quickly. The mechanism of action of Protargol stops the development of inflammatory reactions.

In addition, the body is influenced by silver ions, which actively suppress reproduction different forms fungi, viruses, bacteria. The drug prevents the penetration of microbes and bacteria into the mucous membrane.

Appointment of Protargol

This drug is used by doctors of various fields - otolaryngologists, ophthalmologists, urologists, gynecologists. In pediatrics, Protargol for babies has found its application in the treatment of the following inflammatory processes:

  • conjunctivitis;
  • otitis;
  • pharyngitis;
  • sinusitis;
  • sinusitis;
  • acute or chronic rhinitis;
  • diseases of the urethra.

In case of intolerance, the drug should be stopped immediately. It is also worth considering the fact that the remedy is very effective against bacteria, but against viruses it is completely powerless.

Contraindications Protargol

Nose drops for children should not be taken if a child is allergic to silver preparations. As indicated in the instructions, it can manifest itself as a sharp increase in secretion, which begins to stand out from the nasal sinuses. A rash may develop on the baby's chin and around his nose. In case of an overdose of the drug, an allergic reaction may also occur, which requires immediate medical attention. It is forbidden to use it for a nursing woman, as it enters the baby's body through breast milk.

In addition, the use of drops can cause the following negative reactions:

  • feeling thirsty and dry mouth;
  • redness of the eyes;
  • dizziness;
  • increased sleepiness;
  • headaches;
  • itching and burning in the nose when instilling the product.

Very rarely, Protargol causes an allergic reaction, manifested in the form of dermatitis, urticaria or Quincke's edema.

Instructions for use

If the child is less than a year old, then a 1% solution is used, and for older children, 2% can be used. The dosage, duration, frequency of administration, as well as the concentration of nasal drops from a cold is determined by the doctor, because they depend on the diagnosis and the patient's age.

For eye diseases of an inflammatory nature, for example, with conjunctivitis, infants are prescribed 1 to 3 drops per day. With ENT diseases little child it is necessary to instill in the nose 1 - 4 drops twice a day. Before treating a child, you must make sure that he is not allergic to this drug. For this, a test is carried out - one drop of the product is applied to the skin in the elbow bend area and after 15 minutes the result is checked. If in this place itching, redness or other negative reactions appear, then such a drug is contraindicated in a child.

How to properly instill the drug in the nose for infants?

To put drops of Protargol into your nose with a runny nose for infants, you must adhere to the following rules:

  • the nasal cavity is washed with saline using drops, sprays or saline solution;
  • the child's nostrils are cleaned with a nasal aspirator or a cotton swab;
  • the baby is laid on his back, the bottle is shaken with drug and instill the agent into each nostril using a pipette;
  • this procedure is repeated every day, morning and evening.

This drug not addictive, but the duration of treatment should be two weeks, no more, and it is best to limit it to 5 - 7 days. This is explained by the properties of silver, which spreads to all organs and settles in them. Its excessive amount in the body can cause the development of a rare disease called "argyrosis", in which the color of the skin and eyes becomes silvery.

Thus, when a child has a runny nose caused by an infection, the pediatrician may prescribe a drug such as Protargol. Its versatility is due to its antifungal and antiviral properties. Reapplication possible only as prescribed by a doctor. In each case, the treatment period and dosage are set individually.

A phenomenon that any person has encountered, often it will not escape even infants. For newborns, a runny nose is dangerous because their nasal passages are very narrow and nasal congestion can be life-threatening. That is why, at the very first symptoms, you should fight a runny nose. The long-recognized remedy Protargol is successfully used in pediatrics to this day, including for babies, we will read its instructions for use below.

Composition and pharmacological actions

Protargol is for a cold. Despite the fact that this drug of the last century and began to use it back in 1964, it remains popular and effective to this day.

It is based on colloidal silver... For 100 g of solution, 1 or 2 g of silver proteinate is required. In addition to the active ingredient, the composition contains auxiliary components: potassium dihydrogen phosphate, disodium hydrogen phosphate, imidourea, purified water.

Did you know? The bactericidal properties of silver have been known since antiquity. So, in order to endow water with this quality, people poured it into a silver vessel or lowered some product made of this metal into it.

Protargol has an astringent and anti-inflammatory effect, inhibits the growth of bacteria on the mucous membranes. The essence of his action is that he forms a film on the mucous membrane, which prevents the spread of the inflammatory process.

Protargol is a powder of brown or yellow-brown odorless color. Has a slightly bitter and astringent taste. The solution is prepared exclusively in pharmacies by pharmacists. It is impossible to do this at home, since ultra-precise dosages and adherence to the percentage of the solution are required.

Protargol is prescribed in the complex therapy of such diseases:

  • runny nose;
  • inflammation of the adenoids;
  • otitis;
  • conjunctivitis (rare).

Important! When viral infections of the upper respiratory tract, the drug is ineffective, since it has an antibacterial effect, and is powerless against viruses.

Can I use babies

At what age is Protargol used for children, according to the instructions for use? This drug has no age restrictions, it is safe for both adult patients and infants. The only caveat is that infants are prescribed a solution of a lower concentration, so in the pharmacy, warn the pharmacist that you need a 1% solution.

How and how many days to drip for a child

Depending on the complexity and type of the disease, babies are prescribed 1 to 4 drops in each nostril twice a day. Before use, it is advisable to test for: apply the solution to the skin in the elbow bend area and observe the reaction for 15 minutes. The algorithm for using Protargol, according to the instructions for children under one year old, in the nose is as follows:

  • First you need to flush your nasal passages with saline. For this, pharmacy sprays, for example, Humer, Aquamaris, Quicks, or saline are suitable.
  • Then clear the nose of mucous secretions using an aspirator.
  • After that, instillation. The child needs to be laid on his back, first turn his head on one side and drop the medicine into the nostril, which is below. After a few seconds, turn the head over to the other side and in the same way instill the second nostril.
  • Repeat the procedure twice a day, morning and evening.

Newborns can lubricate the mucous surface of the nose with a cotton swab moistened with this drug. The duration of treatment is usually 5 to 7 days.

special instructions

Protargol is not addictive and its effectiveness does not decrease over time. Nonetheless, do not use it for more than one week, since silver, as a heavy metal, is capable of settling on organs and accumulating. This can lead to a rare disease argyrosis - the whites of the eyes, the skin acquire a silvery hue. In addition, excessive concentration of silver in the body can lead to pulmonary edema.

Important!For these reasons, before use, it is necessary to consult a doctor and strictly adhere to the recommended doses and duration of treatment.

Contraindications and side effects

The only contraindication is sensitivity to any component of the drug. Adverse reactions can be observed only of a local nature, since the active substance is not absorbed into the blood. These include:

  • allergic reactions;
  • burning;
  • irritation.
With prolonged use and exceeding dosages, headaches and dry mouth may occur.

Storage conditions

It is pointless to order a drug in a pharmacy for storage in a first-aid kit "just in case", since the ready-made solution has a very limited shelf life. Store Protargol after opening in a cool, dark place., it is best if it is a refrigerator, especially in hot weather.

Did you know?Rhinitis is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most common disease in the world. On average, a person spends 3 to 4 years of their life with a stuffy nose.

The solution is sold in dark glass vials, since it does not tolerate sunlight, silver precipitates and the medicine loses its properties. The ready-made solution is suitable for use within 15 days... Shake the bottle thoroughly before use, and then close the lid tightly.

To all of the above, it should be added that Protargol is the most effective in complex therapy, and for the speedy recovery of your baby, you should not neglect the accompanying doctor's prescriptions.

Babies are less resistant to attacks from bacteria and viruses that trigger colds and infections of the nose, ears or throat. With such diseases, nasal congestion, runny nose, cough, sore throat and other unpleasant symptoms often occur.

One of the means that help get rid of the inflammatory process in the nasopharynx is "Protargol". This medicine has been in demand for many years both in adult patients and in the treatment of young children.

Features:

In pharmacies, "Protargol" is presented as a powder or a tablet, and before using such forms of medicine, you need to prepare a medicinal solution at home yourself. To dilute the drug, there is an ampoule with 10 ml of solvent in the package. The powder is sold inside a glass bottle and is a hygroscopic light brown mass. There is a dropper stopper on the top of the bottle or there is a pipette in its cap.

If the preparation is in solid form, the package contains a blister with one tablet, a solvent in an ampoule and an empty bottle equipped with a pipette cap. The tablet itself is round and flat, and its color is uneven, dark brown, almost black, with a blue tint.

The active substance of the drug is represented by a compound of silver with protein molecules, which is called silver proteinate or colloidal silver. Its amount in one tablet or in one portion of powder is 200 mg, and the silver content in the active compound "Protargol" corresponds to 8%. The powder form of the drug does not contain other substances, and a binding component, for example, povidone, may be present in the tablet. The solvent in all forms of the medicine is water for injection.

It is often possible to purchase a prepared aqueous solution at the pharmacy. It is sold in glass bottles with a cork, and the date on which the drops expire is always marked on the paper label. Such a solution, like a home-made medicine from a powder or tablet, has a brown color and a bitter taste, and there is no smell.

Operating principle

The silver compound, which is the basis of "Protargol", has antiseptic and disinfecting properties. They are due to the ability of silver ions released from proteinate to act on bacteria that are present on the mucous membrane. By connecting with the DNA of microbes, silver inhibits the process of their reproduction, helping the body to cope with pathogens faster.

Sensitivity analysis showed that "Protargol" affects a large number of different microorganisms, among which there are streptococci, moraxella, staphylococcus and other bacteria that cause inflammation in the ears, nose or throat. The solution is also harmful to fungi, including candida. At the same time, silver ions act on pathogenic microorganisms more actively than on non-pathogenic microorganisms, therefore, dysbacteriosis after the use of "Protargol" does not occur.

A drug also has a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect... It is related to the ability of silver to deposit proteins on the mucosal surface, resulting in a protective film. Due to its formation, the sensitivity of the damaged membranes decreases, and the vessels narrow, as a result of which inflammatory reactions slow down and the disease does not spread to neighboring areas.

Indications

Most often, "Protargol" is prescribed for various diseases of the ENT organs.

The medication is used in children with:

  • rhinitis;
  • sinusitis;
  • nasopharyngitis;
  • sinusitis;
  • purulent otitis media;
  • pharyngitis.

The remedy can be instilled into the eyes with blepharitis or conjunctivitis. In addition, "Protargol" is prescribed by urologists and gynecologists for inflammatory processes in the genitourinary organs, for example, with urethritis or vaginitis.

Is it prescribed for adenoids?

Many otolaryngologists prescribe Protargol when adenoiditis is detected in a small patient, when the nasal mucosa is inflamed, and the baby constantly complains of congestion and discharge. Such an inflammatory process in the adenoids is dangerous due to complications due to which breathing is disturbed, oxygen deficiency occurs, and hearing deteriorates.

The use of "Protargol" helps to dry the mucous membrane and reduce inflammation of the tonsils, so that sometimes even surgical removal of growths can be avoided.

At what age is it allowed?

"Protargol" does not have any age restrictions, but it is permissible to use this remedy in the treatment of young patients (especially in newborns and children under one year old) only if prescribed by a doctor. The prophylactic use of Protargol should also be agreed with a pediatrician, otolaryngologist or other specialist.

Contraindications and side effects

The use of "Protargol" is strictly prohibited in case of hypersensitivity to this drug. An allergy to the drug can be detected by a simple test - drop one drop on the skin of the baby's hand and look at the reaction after 15 minutes. If there is no redness, rash or other changes in the treated area, the product can be further dripped into the nose.

As already noted, the solution can cause hives or other allergic reaction... Sometimes after using Protargol there is a slight irritation at the site of treatment, due to which the drug can cause itching or burning sensation.

If you experience these or any other unpleasant symptoms, you should consult your doctor.

Instructions for use

If the reason for using Protargol is one of the otorhinolaryngological diseases (runny nose, pharyngitis, sinusitis, and so on), the agent is dripped into each nasal passage twice a day. A single dosage should be checked with a doctor, as well as the percentage of the solution used, since in childhood often they use not a 2% medicine, but a 1% solution, dripping it in an amount of 1 to 5 drops.

When used in the nose, the following nuances should be considered.

  • Before using Protargol, it is recommended to rinse the nose with a saline solution (both normal saline solution and any preparation based on sea water are suitable for this procedure), then clean the passages with cotton cords or an aspirator.
  • Having laid the child on his back and shaking the bottle with the solution, he is taken with a pipette and injected into each nostril in the amount prescribed by the doctor.
  • If the treatment of the nose is prescribed for a baby, "Protargol" can not be dripped into the nose, but applied to the mucous membrane using cotton wool soaked in the medicine.
  • It is most convenient to bury the medicine in the nose in the morning after sleep, when other hygiene procedures are being carried out, and the second time in the evening, when the baby is getting ready for bed.

If Protargol is discharged with eye disease, a 2% solution is most often used... Depending on the pathology, the doctor prescribes to drip the drug 2-3 drops into each eye, and the frequency of application can be from 2 to 4 times during the day. For otitis media, the medicine should be dripped into the ear three times a day, 2-5 drops.

For urological infections, use a two percent "Protargol"... The product is washed bladder or the urethra, that is, such treatment is carried out only in a medical institution.

The duration of treatment with "Protargol" is determined individually, because it is influenced by both the diagnosis and the reaction child's body... Although there is no addiction to the drug, it is not used for a very long time, so as not to provoke the accumulation of silver in the tissues.

Most often, doctors prescribe a drip of Protargol for five to seven days. Less often, it is permissible to use the tool for up to two weeks.

Overdose

Too large a dose of drops or accidentally swallowing them in large quantities is a health hazard to the child and can cause poisoning.

If an overdose is detected, you should immediately call a doctor.

Terms of sale and storage

You don't need a prescription to buy Protargol in a pharmacy. The price of a medicine depends on the form, city and manufacturer. Usually it ranges from 80 to 180 rubles per package.

Proper storage of a medicine directly affects its effectiveness. After preparation of a solution from a tablet or powder, its shelf life is 30 days. Throw away a month after mixing dry or solid colloidal silver with water. If the product is not stored in liquid form, then its shelf life is 2 or 3 years.

The drops should be kept at home in a cool place (at temperatures from +2 to +8 degrees), where they will not be affected by the sun's rays. The top shelf of the refrigerator is best for storing Protargol, so the solution will not be reached by children.

If during storage the drug has become heterogeneous or a silvery sheen appears on the bottle, it is better to refuse further use of such Protargol, replacing the drug with a fresh solution.

Babies are not uncommon. This is the most common symptom in babies in their first year of life. For the treatment of rhinitis in children and adults, Protargol is used. This drug eliminates the common cold, has an astringent and antiseptic effect.

Protargol - composition, form of release and properties of the drug

Protargol is a topical agent. The preparation contains a colloidal powder, which contains silver particles, due to which the product has an astringent effect.

When the solution enters the mucous membrane, a protective film is formed due to the effect of silver ions on proteins. Due to this, the sensitivity of the skin and mucous membranes is reduced, a narrowing occurs blood vessels... Silver ions accumulate on bacteria and disinfect them. Due to this, the inflammatory process is reduced, and the vital activity of pathogenic microorganisms is suppressed.

The main advantage of the drug is the absence of dysbiosis. The drug is prepared to order in some private and many public pharmacies.

The drug is produced in the form of drops of 1% or 2%. The concentration of the active substance is 7.8-8.3%. Taking into account the concentration of silver ions, they reduce the growth of bacteria and completely remove them. The solution is in the form of a clear liquid, it can be dark brown or light brown in color. It has no smell, it tastes bitter.

Due to its unusual composition, the drug can be used to treat ENT diseases even in young children.

Store the drug after use in a dark and cool place, while tightly closing the bottle lid. The drug quickly deteriorates if storage conditions are not followed. If a cloudy black precipitate with a metallic sheen appears, then the drug can no longer be used.

You can store Protargol for 10-20 days after opening. It should be remembered that exposure to sunlight leads to the fact that the drug loses its beneficial properties.

When Protargol is prescribed

The drug is actively used in otolaryngology for the treatment of purulent inflammatory diseases. In otolaryngology, Protargol is used in the following cases:

  • Acute and chronic nasopharyngitis

With purulent inflammatory processes in the middle ear, Protargol is also prescribed.The use of Protargol is advisable only for bacterial infections, which are characterized by thick green nasal discharge.

In ophthalmology, the drug is used to treat inflammatory eye diseases, blepharitis, conjunctivitis.

It should be noted that the drug is not addictive, therefore it can be used to treat diseases in both children and adults.

In gynecological practice, the use of the drug is indicated for cervical erosion, cervicitis, vaginitis, salpingitis and other diseases.

Protargol is often used to treat urethritis and cystitis. It should be noted that the drug based on silver ions is not used as the only agent in the treatment of inflammatory diseases of the ENT organs. It is advisable to use the drug in combination with other drugs.

Features of use for babies

According to the instructions, the drug can be used from 5 years old, however, under the supervision of a doctor, drops can be used even for children under one year old under the supervision of a pediatrician.

Before you bury your nose with Protargol, you should clean the nasal passages and. For this purpose, use a special syringe, aspirator and cotton swabs. Use a saline solution if necessary.

Next, put the baby on its back and drip a solution of 1-2 drops into each nostril. Perform the procedure in the morning and in the evening for 5 days. Treatment, especially for infants, is desirable not to delay. If the disease has turned into chronic form, then the duration of treatment can be up to 2 weeks. If the baby is only 2-3 weeks old, then a weak solution is used for a cold.

It should be remembered that the active substance of the drug not only eliminates the symptoms of a cold, but also the cause of the development.

The drug can be used to lubricate mucous membranes. This method is less effective, but eliminates the appearance of side effects. Before use, be sure to shake the container with the contents.

With conjunctivitis, eyes are instilled 2 drops 2-3 times a day. The effectiveness of treatment with Protargol depends on the concentration of the active substance. With a small amount of silver ions, they prevent the development of pathogenic bacteria, and with an increased concentration, they completely destroy them. The dosage of the drug is prescribed only by a doctor.

Contraindications and side effects

An antiseptic drug should not be used in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance. It is impossible to know about the sensitivity in advance. She manifests adverse reactions... Do not use during pregnancy and lactation.

The use of the drug is not recommended for adults and children prone to allergic reactions.It is important to know that the drug is very toxic when taken orally. Even a slight use of the solution inside can lead to the development of severe poisoning.

Use of the drug for viral positive result will not bring and use in this case it is inappropriate.

Any drug, including Protargol, can cause side reactions.

They usually appear if the solution is used in large doses or with prolonged and uncontrolled treatment. While taking Protargol, the following side effects may develop:

  • Itchy skin.
  • Atopic deramatitis.
  • Hives.
  • Quincke's edema.
